Abstract
The Celtic silver coins of Forrer type 352, once called Mattiacan or Vangionic, bear the well known bird man figure on the reverse and are now named after the salt producing site of Bad Nauheim. They belong to the first century BC and have been assigned in turn to Germanic and to Celtic workshops. The paper summarises the history of research from Forrer in 1908 to Allen in 1971, describes the variants never examined in detail before, and traces the derivation of the type from its models, among them two quinarii with a head of Roma.
