Abstract

While studying Italic amphorae from the Celtic oppidum of Manching, the author set out to date them by the Republican coins found with them and so came up against the problems of Republican coin chronology. Since Rainer Thomsen the introduction of the denarius has been placed around 210 BC, a date many numismatists accepted only because the Morgantina excavations appeared to confirm it: denarii already lay beneath the destruction layers of two temples. The paper re-examines the Morgantina evidence as published so far and asks what room is then left for the victoriatus.
