Abstract
For a dissertation on the electrum coinage of Phokaia and Mytilene, the alloys were to be determined as precisely as possible and without destroying the coins; neutron activation analysis was chosen. The study covers 162 hektai, 59 from Phokaia, 95 from Mytilene and eight from Kyzikos for comparison, arranged by presumed chronology. Three aims are pursued: to detect changes in the alloy as a chronological criterion, to calculate the metal value of the Phokaian currency in silver and in gold, and to re-examine the exchange rates of the electrum and gold currencies of Asia Minor.
