Abstract

One of the strangest figures in the medieval history of Egypt is Kafur, a slave from Nubia or Abyssinia, described by local historians as a eunuch and surrounded by anecdote. He passed into the possession of the founder of the Ikhshidid dynasty, who had him educated, freed him and made him tutor to his sons with the title ustad. After his master's death the business of state lay entirely in his hands, and his name is said to have been named beside that of the Abbasid caliph in the Friday prayer at an early date. Against this background the paper presents a dinar of the year 356 AH.
