Abstract

When Friedrich von Wirsberg was elected bishop of Würzburg in 1558, twelve days after the murder of his predecessor, both private wealth and the finances of the see had been ruined by the wars of the first half of the century and by the turmoil of the Reformation. The paper, the second instalment of these studies on the coinage of Würzburg, sets out that situation at length: the peasant rising of 1525, the agreement of Schmalkalden, the role of Wilhelm von Grumbach and above all the private war of Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades, who in 1552 extorted hundreds of thousands of gulden from Würzburg, so that citizens and chapters had to surrender their silver. The coinage of this bishop then follows.
