Abstract

Among Roman coin finds in private hands submitted for identification at Regensburg in 1974 was a plated and hybrid antoninianus of Otacilia Severa, picked up in the fields at Riekofen. The paper takes it as an occasion to review the scholarship on subaerate silver coins: Theodor Mommsen inclined to regard them as official issues, Regling and Schrötter rather as fraudulent private forgery, and Josef Graf concluded in 1903 that plated denarii came largely from the state workshop or at least with official connivance. Zonaras on the Second Punic War and Pliny on a measure of 91 BC point the same way.
