Abstract

Seventy bronze coins of the colony of Stobi from four collections were analysed, distributed as evenly as possible across the rulers from whom Stobi issues are known and across three size classes. Both the main constituents and the admixtures of tin, antimony, zinc and silver were determined semi-quantitatively against external standards; lead could be measured only at higher proportions, because the simultaneous presence of tin interfered with its strongest line. The paper states explicitly where it draws the line between main constituent, admixture and trace, and draws conclusions from the material about ancient alloying practice.
