Abstract

The first instalment of these studies on the coinage of Würzburg. For the beginning of minting the author draws on the English hoard of Cuerdale, whose burial is placed between 903 and about 905, and on the incursion of Count Adalbert of Babenberg into the see in August 903; a royal mint may therefore be assumed shortly after 900. Its activity can be followed further: a denarius of Otto I retaining the type with cross and church gable, denarii of Otto II modelled on Mainz with the new form of the timber church and, for the first time, the name of the patron saint Kilian, and an early obol naming no mint lord, which the author ascribes to the growing influence of the bishop.
