Abstract

In the spring of 1972 a heavily encrusted coin was picked up as a surface find on the Burgfeld near Deutsch-Altenburg, east of the camp and thus within the canabae of Carnuntum. It weighs 2.45 g and shows on the obverse a swastika with pellets in the angles, on the reverse a horse springing to the left with a dumbbell-shaped body and a beaded mane. The type is well attested in Gallic numismatics; the piece is slightly underweight owing to its condition, since the average for 166 known specimens is 3.02 g. A horse brooch of the end of the first century AD comes from roughly the same spot.
