Abstract

The classification of the earliest British gold coinage had so far rested almost entirely on the overall impression of the coin images, that is on general stylistic observation, without a carefully differentiating typology. The methodological advance of Celtic numismatics, the reconstruction of the technical sequence of striking, had likewise not been applied to the early British issues. This study, a Munich master's thesis, supplies both: using die links while attending to wear and ageing of the dies, it reconstructs the sequence of striking for the individual series. It rests on a body of material recorded at Oxford from many European and American cabinets.
