Abstract

The collection of the State Hermitage holds 213 coins of Würzburg from the tenth and eleventh centuries. What that body of material means for the history of western European coinage is clear from a comparison with Finland, where Salmo names only 64 Würzburg coins of the period. Most come from old Russian hoards, and even the pieces of unknown origin certainly go back to denarius hoards in eastern Europe. The survey is preceded by a chronological list of the relevant finds, from Waskowo with a burial date of 1015 to those of about 1090, each with the number and proportion of Würzburg pieces; the largest, Wichmjas, contains 152 of them.
