Abstract

In the monetary convention of 1753 Austria and Bavaria agreed on the twenty gulden standard, raised in 1761 to twenty-four. Alongside convention talers, the Brabant or crown talers circulated at the beginning of the nineteenth century as the real trade coin. Because the price of fine silver was rising, the Augsburg merchants proposed in 1807 that Bavaria strike crown talers of its own to the Brabant weight and fineness. In 1808 Max I Joseph authorised one million gulden and fixed the legal value at 2 gulden 42 kreuzer, while actually minting the Cologne mark of fine silver at 24 gulden 31 kreuzer, so that the true value was only 2 gulden 38 kreuzer. The paper follows the consequences of that overvaluation and the development of the history talers.
