Abstract

A ceremonial lecture for the ninetieth anniversary of the Bavarian Numismatic Society, given on 27 November 1971 and spanning roughly a thousand years. Medieval Austria grew out of the Bavarian duchy, and it is telling that the oldest coin struck on what is now Austrian soil comes from a Bavarian duke: the Salzburg denarius of Arnulf with the legend IVVAVO CIVITAS. This early coinage continued with ducal and imperial issues and, from 996, with those of the archbishops, all of a uniform type closely related to the Bavarian ones; it ended in the eleventh century. Austria's own coinage began only in the twelfth, when Margrave Leopold III started striking at Krems about 1120.
