Abstract

In the file of the Bavarian chief mint on the striking of the history talers, a sheet with three drawings for a medal lies by mistake among designs by Johann Baptist Stiglmaier, its foliation showing no connection to the document. The first design, 40 mm across, shows a female figure holding an even balance and leaning on a column shaft; faint wavy lines indicate the legend, concentric circles and a cast shadow the relief. The two further drawings are the obverse and reverse of a medal, joined by a bridge, the reverse carrying a six-line inscription in a laurel wreath. A later note with two question marks reads "opening of the new mint". The paper attempts to attribute the designs to a medallist.
