Abstract
The opening of a series. Islamic coins in private hands are presented which, so far as the literature available to the author shows, are unpublished or known but never described in detail. Legends are given in full only where the type is unknown or particularly notable; otherwise notes on divergences from published types suffice. The first section concerns the Umayyads, with a half dinar of 99 AH and dirhams of the years 92 to 122 from mints such as Suq al-Ahwaz, Abarqubad and Balkh, the second the Abbasids, with dinars of 206 to 265 from Misr and Madinat as-Salam. The year 265 AH marks the end of Abbasid striking at Cairo.
