Abstract
That the western Roman government had to give up the imperial residence at Trier around the turn of the fourth to the fifth century, in favour of places lying further inland, is not disputed; only the date remains open, between 395 and about 402, and the historical judgement of the measure depends on it. A further difficulty is that the highest civil administration of Gaul also withdrew, though not necessarily at the same time as the court, and that the city mint was affected, without it being clear how. New evidence is offered by three little noticed calibration weights for the solidus in the name of Honorius, at least two of which were found in the inner city of Trier and whose find spots are precisely known.
