Abstract

The Attic standard series of the Syrian usurper Diodotos, who bore the throne name Tryphon and for whom the years 142/41 to 139/38 BC are now generally accepted, consists of tetradrachms, drachms, chalkoi and half pieces. Characteristic of every denomination is a so-called Macedonian helmet with a brim bent at the side, a laurel wreath, a volute as the remnant of the visor, a long point in place of a crest, cheek pieces decorated with thunderbolts, a massive ibex horn and two medallions bearing an eagle and a thyrsus-carrying panther. The same helmet already appears on drachms of Antiochos VI, for whom Tryphon in fact ruled and whom he had placed on the throne in 146/45, there with the letters TPY between horn and point.
