Abstract
From the middle of the 16th century an the very common "Schulpfennig" (school penny) of Nuremberg had the function of an admission token and as "Horn-book". The representations of the reckoning master (Rechenmeister) and the ABC-tablet refer to the Ars Arithmetica and the Ars Grammatica in the service at the writing- and the arithmetic school. Both arts had a prefered rank among the other arts, since by these two the progress of all other arts yet becomes possible
