Abstract

The slightly bent, longish object fixed to the emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus' radiate crown or laurel wreath in his Imperial coinage is not a horn, as first in 1859 Cohen had surmised by the resemblance to certain representations of hellenistic rulers. It is a bull's penis, which had a highly religious symbolic value. In the sequence of the emperor's subsequent loss of power the Symbol is vanishing from his coinage
