Abstract
This is the interpretation of a bronze coin type struck in Nicaea under Antoninus Pius, showing the image of the astronomer Hipparchus, who was born in this town. Author further refers to the episode, reported by Aurelius Victor (41, 19 sq.) telling us that Marcus Aurelius had punished the Nicaeans by a special tribute of grain, because the city's envoys had not known that the famous astronomer was a son of their home town. This story is dated into the time, when Marcus Aurelius was not yet Augustus. Conclusions 213
