Abstract

Maps show the Mughal empire from the late eighteenth century to the deposition of Bahadur Shah II in 1857 as a steadily shrinking territory, confined from 1748 to the area around Delhi. That matches the political situation: after the death of Aurangzeb in 1707 the Rajput states and the Sikhs made themselves independent, Hyderabad and Mysore declared their independence, the Marathas overran large parts, and the British gained Bengal, Bihar and much of the south. The paper tests this course against the regional coinages.
