Abstract

A short version of a paper in the Acta Musei Napocensis. The hoard of Scărișoara, the first on Dacian soil to contain tetradrachms of the earliest imitations of Philip II together with Histrian drachms, led Constantin Preda to place the beginning of those imitations around 300 BC. The author disagrees: when the Histrian drachms left circulation is unknown, and the gold staters of Philip remained in use into the second century, as did types of Alexander and Lysimachus. Original issues of the Macedonian kings therefore offer only a very rough guide. That tetradrachms of Lysimachus were still countermarked under Claudius shows what part they continued to play in the economy of Thrace.
