Abstract

Under Caligula a sestertius reverse with the legend ADLOCVT COH shows the emperor addressing the praetorian cohorts. In the RIC, Mattingly and Sydenham saw in it only a general reference, while Mattingly in the BMC pointed to a particular occasion: immediately after his accession Caligula reviewed the praetorians together with the senate, paid out Tiberius's bequest and added the same sum himself, so that each man received two thousand sesterces. The paper points to a later scene: after having a bridge of ships built across the bay between Bauli and Puteoli in 39 and crossing it as if for battle, Caligula halted in mid span, delivered an address and rewarded the troops, who according to Suetonius were the praetorians.
