Abstract
Two types stand out in the Roman aes coinage of Tiberius, their reverses showing honorific shields bearing portraits, so-called imagines clipeatae, with the legends CLEMENTIAE and MODERATIONI. In the whole of imperial coinage they are unique. Since Sutherland it has been taken as settled that both types were issued at the same time, since the same obverse die served now one reverse and now the other. The date remains disputed, because the only clue is the title IMP VIII, which Tiberius bore from AD 16 until his death and which therefore narrows little. The paper examines the dates so far proposed and seeks to establish both date and meaning anew.
