Abstract
On 18 August 1966, during excavations by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a hoard of some 10,500 Roman silver coins came to light at Mampsis in the central Negev, presented here by the author as director of the dig. The bulk are tetradrachms of the Severan period; more than two thousand are Trajanic drachms, together with several hundred tetradrachms of Trajan and Hadrian, three denarii of Rabbel II and one imperial denarius of Trajan. The 2042 drachms belong to the provincial types celebrating the acquisition of the Nabataean kingdom, usually attributed to the mint of Caesarea in Cappadocia. Examining them gives the author a new argument for that attribution.
