Abstract

Through the kindness of Spink the author was able to record a parcel of 148 coins and two fragments from the Serra Riccò hoard. This find of Cisalpine drachms and obols imitating Massalia came to light in 1923 during railway works in the hills north of Genoa. Pautasso described 37 drachms and 127 obols at Turin without knowing of this parcel; in all, no more than 341 coins can at present be accounted for. The drachms show a head of Artemis and a lion, mostly weigh over three grams and are often struck from worn obverse dies. A chip from a denarius of the moneyers C. Annius and L. Fabius of about 82 BC gives a convincing burial date of about 80 BC, in the disturbances of the Sullan dictatorship.
