Abstract

The Nuremberg gate tokens are unusual in kind, perhaps unique: each was made as a single piece for the holder named on it and served him as proof of the right to pass the gates of the imperial city at night, when they were officially shut. All are round engraved silver discs of 27 to 30 mm and 14 to 18 g, bearing the third city arms on the obverse and the holder's name and family arms on the reverse. Carl Friedrich Gebert listed 33 tokens, 22 of which he had seen himself; several of the rest rest on casts made for Im Hof, which explains both why so many have vanished and why silvered lead casts still turn up. The author presents four more, among them one of 1766 for Georg Burkhard Haller.
