Abstract

In the course of examining early medieval non-ferrous finds from Bavaria, Asia Minor and Egypt, three copper coins each from Alexandria and Constantinople were analysed as well: tetradrachms of Diocletian and Maximian, a twelve nummi piece of Heraclius, forty nummi pieces of Justin I and Justin II and a follis of Basil I. The three Alexandrian pieces are heavily leaded bronze alloys, the tin content of the oldest more than twice that of the youngest. Of the Constantinople coins, that of Justin I is brass, while the two younger ones are almost pure copper. The figures are published without further comment so that later studies of this kind have comparative material to hand.
