Abstract
In the autumn of 1968 a find of medieval denarii appeared in the Istanbul trade, said to have consisted of one to two hundred pieces all of the same type; nothing was reported of the find spot, but it certainly lies within present-day Turkey. Some dozens were shown to the author: French issues of the county of Maine with the monogram of Count Herbert I and the legends COMES CENOMANIS and SIGNUM DEI VIVI. The type goes back to Herbert I but continued unchanged for a long time, probably to the threshold of the thirteenth century. It can only have reached its find spot through the crusades, and the paper follows the routes by way of Norman rule in Maine and the pilgrimages of the counts of Anjou.
