Abstract
Thucydides reports that five years after their arrival at Naxos the Chalcidians set out under Thucles and founded Leontinoi and then Katane. When that happened can be inferred only indirectly from his account of Megara Hyblaia, which he says stood for 245 years until Gelon abolished it around 483 BC and which was founded shortly after Leontinoi and Katane; taken literally this yields 728 and 729. Such precision invites mistrust, especially since Thucydides names no second fixed point and rounds all his figures to five. As 245 is exactly seven times 35, a tradition of seven generations probably lay behind it, already converted into years by his source. From this chronology the paper proceeds to Hieron's foundation of Aitna and to the Hieroneion.
