Abstract
The coinage of the Roman Republic contains only five types showing an equestrian statue: two denarii of the gens Aemilia, one with an armoured rider on a three-arched structure lettered LEP, one with a rider carrying a trophy over his shoulder; two denarii of the gens Marcia, one with a rider on a five-arched structure inscribed AQVA MAR, one with a rider holding a palm branch; and one aureus of Sulla. That Sulla's piece refers to the statue mentioned by Appian is beyond question. The interpretation of the other four is unsettled, yet there is little room to doubt that actual statues are meant, since on all four riders a base is at least indicated.
