Abstract
In Pauly's Realencyclopädie Ruge described Sebaste in 1921 as a city in Paphlagonia known only from coins of the time of Marcus Aurelius and Verus bearing the legend CEBACTH MHTP, and possibly a temporary name for Pompeiopolis. The Recueil Général lists four coins of this city, David Magie repeated the conjecture in 1950, and Imhoof-Blumer had already placed some of the pieces there in 1895. The view is thus widely held, but according to the author it is not correct. He assembles the material, pieces of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus with Athena Nikephoros and with a flying Nike, among them a specimen bought at Mersin, and discusses at the end where the issues really belong.
