Abstract

So far as the author knows, no one has yet dealt with the part played by Bavarian coins in medieval Hungary, although their appearance in Hungarian coin finds is a plain fact. Because the source value of coin finds is far higher for the Middle Ages than for later periods, studying the composition of the finds is worthwhile even if no proof of direct relations emerges. The Bavarian pieces occur either in the western border strip of Hungary or generally west of the Danube, in Transdanubia, an area which later changes of frontier have divided between Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and Croatia. The study covers the silver pfennigs of medieval Bavaria, with the influx of other south German issues taken into account.
