Abstract

Little has been published systematically on Celtic minting rights, and the question of who held them among the Bohemian Celts had not been treated at all: neither Forrer nor Paulsen nor Pink even lists the term in their indexes. For the western Celts, tribal princes, civitates, the oppida themselves and even the druids have been proposed as holders of minting authority; in Gaul some ten Celtic princes are attested by name on coins, men known from Caesar's commentaries, so that the social class of the issuers is clear there. Ulrich Kahrstedt held any real tribal minting authority to be out of the question and read the unregulated variety of the Celtic series as issues of magnates. The paper, a congress lecture of 1967, tests this for Bohemia.
