Abstract

Early in the eighteenth century a hoard of Danubian tetradrachms was found in England. Nothing was published at the time, yet enough survives to make a record worthwhile now. The evidence lies in the manuscripts of William Stukeley, a leading antiquary of his day and one of the founders of the Society of Antiquaries, who took notes prolifically throughout his life. His collection of manuscripts remained together into the 1920s and is now scattered among many holdings. Among them are about a dozen incomplete drafts of an intended work on the coins of the ancient British kings, which Stukeley meant to call Britannia Metallica and on which he worked from 1720 until his death without completing it.
