Abstract

The pre-eminent mint of the Bavarian region in the tenth and eleventh centuries was Regensburg, already in Carolingian times one of the few places of coinage east of the Rhine. From the middle of the tenth century its coin design dominated for about a hundred years the new issues of the most varied authorities throughout Bavaria, at Salzburg, Freising, Eichstätt, Nabburg, Cham and Neunburg, and also determined the design at Augsburg in Swabia. Grote and Dannenberg ordered the material, but new finds make a fresh treatment necessary. As groundwork the author gives a list of the ducal issues of the subsidiary mints of Regensburg occurring in the Viking age finds of Sweden. No grant of minting rights is known for any of the three; the dukes evidently struck by virtue of their office.
