Abstract

Mint masters, as those chiefly responsible for the striking of coin, invite us to look behind the scenes of the mint and to lift the persons involved out of their anonymity; that, however, presupposes written sources, which are rare before the sixteenth century. Because Frankfurt am Main established an archive as early as the fourteenth century which remained intact until its partial destruction in the Second World War, and because the papers of Konrad von Weinsberg survive, it is possible to report on Stephan Scherff of Rees already for the first half of the fifteenth century. No complete biography emerges, but the most important stretch shows him as a typical representative of his calling, who often overstepped the bounds of the law and escaped punishment by his shrewdness.
