Abstract

The imperial coinage ordinance of 1559 pushed the gulden and kreuzer currency through almost all of southern Germany; Franconia was an exception, and even in the reorganisation of 1622 the kreuzer could not establish itself everywhere there, because in Bamberg and Würzburg the Franconian pfennig currency held its ground. In Lower Franconia a new Franconian pfennig had emerged in the fifteenth century equal to one and a half old ones; the dreier and the schilling served as middle small change, whole multiples of both pfennigs but not reckonable in whole numbers against batzen and kreuzer. Only in 1622 did Würzburg have small change struck again, prompted by the resolution of the Franconian circle of December 1621. Against this the paper follows the schilling coinage of this prince-bishop.
