Abstract
The occasion was the coin find of Riedheim, described at the end. Like similar finds before it, it offers in particular variety the issues of almost every estate that coined in Franconia and the Upper Palatinate in the last third of the fourteenth century, and together with the Würzburg pfennigs it shows which coins people then dealt with; the pfennig played the chief part in large sums as in small. The Regensburg type goes back to the pfennig which the mint at Regensburg issued from the end of the thirteenth century jointly for the bishop and the duke of Bavaria, a fact the design expresses: differing obverses but the same reverse with a mitred head beside a head in a princely hat. About 1365 Lauf, Amberg, Coburg and Langenzenn took up this type.
