Abstract
The state of research on the Syracusan coinage is remarkably uneven: for the beginning of the series down to about 435 BC, Erich Boehringer's work gives a secure picture, and the flowering of the signing artists is illuminated by Tudeer and several monographs, yet the dates assigned to the fourth century remain disputed. The great catalogues mirror this by uniting the most varied groups under collective headings, and the year 387 keeps appearing as an apparently secure epoch date. A precise solution is to be expected only from the study of dies, since that alone yields a founded relative chronology; after that everything depends on synchronising correctly. The paper probes the ground at three points.
