Abstract
Ever since coins have been collected, forgers have been at work, and among them there are bunglers as well as masters. Much is so crudely made that it serves only for sale to unsuspecting travellers, other work so skilful that even the expert cannot readily turn a suspicion into proof; often the marks of a workshop become clear only from a larger series. In recent months a number of forged Greek coins appeared, apparently coming from Greece, which were submitted to the State Coin Collection and are illustrated here. The text reproduces the substance of an expert report, because it can convey points of method: on the electrum pieces the colour and porous surface betray casting, while on the more dangerous gold coins it is the grainy metal in the depressions and a brownish encrustation.
