Abstract

First on an aureus of Caracalla from A.D. 214 appears a globelike object that cannot be connected with representations of Providentia, but with the god Asclepius of Pergamum, as the evidence of Pergamene bronze coinage shows. Aesculapius of the Imperial coinage may be identified with the „deus Pergameus", since thanks to this deity the emperor Caracalla regained his health during his visit to the sanctuary of this god in Pergamum
