Abstract
This contribution deals with those local coins of the Greek East that give evidence to the gladiatorial munera. Author shows that there are not only those known coins from Synnada that have represented the topic of gladiatorial munera and the hunting of wild beasts, but that there are more so far not yet sufficiently explained coin types that deal with the same theme. Cities of Asia minor like Synnada, Cremna and Side, probably Aspendus too, show the rectangular shield of the gladiator as a token of extraordinarily abundant donations for the organization of gladiatorial games and hunts of wild animals, approved by the emperor. Those festivities needed the imperial approval if they superceded a certain dimension. Of course such an Imperial approval improved the reputation of a city thus distinguished. This under certain circumstances was propagated by the city on its local coinage. Conclusions 353
