Abstract
This contribution is dealing with a rather neglected field, the research on paper money of the 19th century. The issue of state paper money from 1849 from the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg is documented by the archive material. Heavy economic strain and increasing debts resulted in the planning and final issue of these bills. Economic transactions connected with these proceedings as well as those problems concerning the repayment in silver are discussed. In 1870 a second edition of taler bills was printed but had a very short circulation only. The introduction of the new Imperial German currency set an end to all local issues of paper money.
