Abstract

This study deals with one of the best known holy mountains of antiquity, which hitherto has not yet been subject to thorough examination, although well known as an emblem of the Imperial mint of Caesarea. In the first part, the catalogue, representations of the mountain have been collected and put into an iconographic order. By quantity representations an coins are predominant, but there are bronze votives too and surprisingly many intaglios. The second part, commenting the representations gives an interpretation, trying to show, how geographical/geological facts can become the basis of religous concepts. It further makes clear that figural representations from the time of romanized Cappadocia form just a small, although very intensive part of the veneration of this volcanic massif. By its form this contribution still resembles an article for a dictionary (LIMC), out of which it has developped. Conclusions 79
