Abstract

Ten years earlier the author had written in this journal on the translation and interpretation of the tenth chapter of Aristotle's Athenaion politeia, and the title itself was meant to say that a sound translation of the Greek text must precede any interpretation. Without that philological groundwork there is a danger that numismatists, relying on supposed knowledge, will read into the text statements it does not make. A second requirement is that for every system read out of the text, measures, weights and coin sizes actually existing in that early period must be demonstrated. On these grounds the paper sets Colin Kraay's interpretation against the author's own, because Kraay did not carry out that comparison.
