Abstract

The series of electrum hektai of Mytilene has long puzzled scholarship. John Healy counted 28 types with incuse and 74 with raised reverses, many of which can be linked to particular gods, their attendants and symbols, or to heroes, only tentatively or not at all. The absence of any legend, the small size of the heads and the wealth of types, which draw eclectically on the Greek and in part the Asia Minor pantheon, lean on types of other mints and seem also to allude to political events, make interpretation both attractive and difficult. The paper offers a new reading of one hekte whose reverse has until now been described as a negro head, a comedy mask, a quarrelsome Hera and a satyr head.
