Abstract

When in 1949, during unauthorised digging west of the southwest corner of the fort at Eining, twenty-five denarii and twenty bronze coins were gathered from burnt debris within a small area, and an aureus only a few metres away, the author could explain this concentration of precious metal only as parts of a hoard already scattered when the building was destroyed and later by ploughing. The history of these finds is tangled: the local heritage officer reported them, the landowner was told to stop digging, part of the material reached the museum at Abensberg, and a Munich collector made notes and plaster casts. After the museum moved, the pieces could be checked against the originals, which produced numerous additions and corrections.
