Abstract
The extensive silver coinages of the Cilician cities in the fourth century BC are well known: under Persian overlordship, Persian generals and satraps had coin struck at Issos, Mallos, Soloi and Tarsos for their armies and the population, bearing their names in Aramaic script. Most of it was produced at Tarsos, where Tiribazos, Pharnabazos, Datames and Mazaios are recorded as issuing authorities; of his successor Arsames, who fell a year later at Issos, no coins are known. The placing of two series is disputed. One shows Baaltars enthroned with sceptre, corn ear, grape and ivy leaf together with the letters T and B, and on the reverse a facing bust of Athena in an Attic helmet. The author assigns them to Balakros.
