Abstract

Without at least approximate figures for the quantities struck, a modern monetary history is unthinkable, for only they make it possible to judge measures of coinage policy and their success. The author gives an example: the effect of the conventions of Baiersdorf in 1624 and Bamberg in 1637 between the bishops of Bamberg and Würzburg and the margraves of Ansbach and Bayreuth has been judged wrongly throughout the literature, because no one knew how much was coined under them; anyone who knows that in 1624/25 Bamberg struck only about twenty-two times the annual salary of its mint warden will not believe in a success. Complete figures are rare and survive for antiquity and the early Middle Ages only in exceptional cases; for Passau the paper supplies them from the archives.
